Types of WIST Events

Speaker Series

WIST strives to extend the professional networks of its members by having access to female leaders in the field of statistics. These speakers include academics and industry professionals.

WiDS Conference

WIST has been a host for the WiDS (Women in Data Science) regional event since 2018. This event includes local women-identifying data scientists (industry and academic), networking event, and data dive hackathon. The conference is held annually in March.

Group Meals

An important tool for women to identify and resolve gender-related obstacles is to have support from a community or networks. The meals are an opportunity to strengthen the WIST network.

Workshops

WIST sponsors a variety of workshops to help WIST members gain aditional skills they may not have the opportunity to learn in their day-to-day academic work. These events include learning how to write R packages, exploring new software, and practicing coding skills

Discussions

WIST sponsors small group events to allow discourse and discussion about topics in STEM. These events are often based on common reading, such as books and articles, or reactions to speakers.

Other Events

WIST may organize other events throughout the year based on suggestions or requests form WIST members. These events can range from specific career development meetings to additional casual meetings to discuss possible research topics.
